INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY BEGAN AS A DAY OF PROTEST AGAINST THE INEQUALITIES WOMEN FACE. TODAY, THE DAY HAS BEEN HIJACKED INTO A DAY OF COMMERCIALISM.

WE CAN’T AFFORD TO LOSE A SINGLE DAY OF PROGRESS. WOMEN’S RIGHTS ARE GOING BACKWARDS, NOT FORWARDS.

1 IN 3

About 1 in 3 women worldwide, around 736 million, experience physical violence in their lifetime (WHO).

3.6 X

Transgender women are 3.6 times more likely to be targeted in hate crimes than cisgender women (UCLA).

Hate crimes against lesbian, gay, and bi individuals due to their sexual orientation have increased by 100% over the last four years (BBC).

$0.75

In 2020, women in C-Suite positions earned just $0.75 for every dollar earned by executive men, down from $0.88 in 2018 and the biggest pay gap since 2012 (Bloomberg).

The general gender pay gap has remained at 22% for the past 30 years (Economic Policy Institute).

$0.57

Intersectionality amplifies the impact of discrimination on women of colour.

In 2020, Hispanic women earned only 57 cents and Black women earned only 64 cents for every $1 earned by white men (CAP).

91m

In 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion in the United States.

About 91 million women of reproductive age live in 24 countries or territories that prohibit abortion under all circumstances (Center for Reproductive Rights).

NOTHING PROVES THIS MORE THAN HOW PROTEST SIGNS OF THE PAST ARE STILL SHOCKINGLY RELEVANT TODAY.

DESPITE THIS, WE ARE NOT ANGRY. WE ARE NOT DISHEARTENED. WE ARE MORE DETERMINED THAN EVER TO STAY PRESENT IN THE FIGHT.

SIGNS FROM YESTERDAY

These protest signs are still as relevant today as they were then, given the current state of women's rights.

They serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles for women's rights. The energy and determination of these women who fought before us are an important part of International Women's Day and should continue to be remembered as we strive towards an equal future.

MEANING OF TODAY

This International Women’s Day, it’s important to remember that this day was born in the spirit of activism.

Our industry has played a role in commercialising International Women’s Day. As we recognise the achievements and struggles of women around the world, let's also remember that it's a day for action and advocacy.

ACT FOR TOMORROW

According to the UN, gender equality is still 300 years away. We can’t waste another day. Join us as we stand with those who have fought for gender equality before us and as we continue to fight for the rights of those who come after us. We are here. We are still present.

Use the signs to participate in any form of protest that resonates with you and encourage others to join in. Or link to a women-focused organisation you’re passionate about and inspire others to take action.
